Today we spent time in Jerusalem. I was struck about how much we spoke about walls. Looking from the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley you see the Old City walls outside which less than 150 years ago there were no houses. Since 1967 there has been great growth. Growth which I can see since my visit in 2010. There has been the growth of both housing and government buildings.

What does someone do when they have land ? They build walls. What does someone do when they have a dispute about land? They build walls. Walls protect but they also exclude.

This evening meeting Archbishop Suheil Dawani I was encouraged by the way Christians, Jews and Muslims are seeking to work together to break down walls.

Tomorrow we travel toBethlehem and another wall. It is easy to focus on the walls in other people’s lives and not address those in ours.
